NW ROADS CLAIM FIVE LIVES

Five people lost lives this morning on the North West roads. Three died in an accident on N12 on the early hours of Saturday.

It’s alleged that a vehicle fatally knocked down a female pedestrian at 01:25.

The vehicle then was hit from behind by another vehicle following it going towards the same direction outside Klerksdorp. The driver and the passenger both women then died as the scene of the accident.

Four other passengers from both vehicles, three men and a two year infant, were taken to the hospital with serious injuries.

On the N4 near Rustenburg at 01:50, a bakkie collided head on with a truck. It’s alleged that the 25-year-old male driver of the bakkie who is deceased was facing an oncoming traffic driving westwards towards Rustenburg.

The bakkie collided with a truck facing an opposite direction, caught fire and was completely gutted. The debris were all over the road leading it to be partially closed but has since been reopened. The other motorist driving eastwards towards Pretoria drove over the dregs and lost control of the vehicle which then rolled several times before coming to a stop.

The 37-year-old male driver also passed on.

The Community Safety and Transport Management MEC Sello Lehari is saddened by the lives that are continuing to be lost on the Provincial roads.

This as the Province came fourth in the country with least fatalities during the festive period.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of the deceased and we wish them strength in this time of grief.

We appreciate the speedy response by the Provincial Highway Patrol officers who were able to prevent further fatalities as both accidents occurred on busy roads," said MEC Lehari.
